Matches' eBay auction items; meaning about hiatus?

Hello, Matches' family (from manager, Miles):

Matches' memorabilia and collectibles are now up for sale at eBay.
seller = thematchesauction2009

Also, searching for "matches memorabilia" or "matches collectibles" should turn up the listings.

Note that the ending times are not all the same. Some are 7 day auctions and some are 5 day (as they were put up on eBay over the last few days), but all close by Thu or Fri.

Some more items may go up for auction in the next day (but maybe with shorter auction periods).

Below are the names of the auction listings, in no particular order.
About half of these were just listed in the last few hours (now 5pm, PST, Sunday 8/16), so they may not show up in searches for another half a day.

(Apologies to anyone confused as I took down this entry for a half an hour after alerted that some items were not appearing in searches.)

I have an email address just for questions about these auction items:
thematchesauction@gmail.com

Take note of shipping and handling charges, which are to be paid separately from the eBay auction payments for winning bids.

Many of the buyers will be in the Bay Area and can pick up the items at the Fillmore show 8/23. Some items are just too difficult to ship, and some will be impractically expensive to ship out of the U.S. (but that's up to the buyers).

Handling charges are needed because most of these will be taken to a commercial shipping service to be boxed and shipped.

Some blog, myspace, messageboard postings have speculated about whether this auction of memorabilia means anything significant to the Matches' plans.

No. This means nothing. (so much nothing's going on.)

Now would be an appropriate time to move out these objects of history whether the Matches were now planning their next tour or whether they announced they hate each other and will never make music together again (neither, of course, which is the case).

And given what the Matches have announced - an indefinite hiatus, it certainly makes sense to clear out and close out their storage room, their trailer, the rehearsal room, various closets and garages (such as mine), as these odds and ends of the Matches' (and the Locals') last nine years or so are best in the hands of appreciative fans. We hope these random pieces of the Matches' own experience and their stage presence might be reminders of powerful music, meaningful live show moments, and, often, connections and bonds between audience members that grew out of shared tastes in creativity and music. Have the Matches' been a band? a cult? a community? Maybe some of all three.

What's next for the Matches? When?
Nothing is clear -- nor need it be.

This is a hiatus, not just a break, so they will not return together soon. They might never get back together. However, as they are very knowldgable fans of other bands and, also, shrewd observers of the performing world, they know that to claim they are breaking up without any possibility of reunion would be false.

At the same time, there is no undeclared scheme to reunite, no secret plan.

The Matches have spoken directly, honestly and transparently to you in saying this end of this phase of the Matches is "an indefinite hiatus." You know as much as they do what will happen or when it will happen, if anything ever will happen, in the Matches' future.

For now, they are thrilled to have their fourth album so taken to heart by their dedicated fans (so moving to me, as well, to read such laudatory comments), they are filled with excitement to be playing these two big shows as old friends on stage with more friends filling the venue, and they are primed and eager to move ahead with creative explorations in new settings.

Things change. That is something good. It can be hard for those most closely affected by the change, as it was difficult for the Matches to acknowledge to themselves that this was the time for a different road, but, still, still -- change is good.

Like yesterday,
- Miles

Matches album 4 - now available: thematchesband.bandcamp.com/

the Matches album 4, unreleased; graphics? title? or not needed?

purchase album 4 HERE

Miles, Matches' manager/executive producer here, writing for the Matches and me both.

The new album is available now. Yes. Now!

Link is at the top of this blog.

Finally, after weeks preparation, various late technical glitches and complications, and many hours preparing accurate and readable credits, lyrics, and notes, the ten tracks are uploaded and eagerly await their digital dispersal into the world.

Check back here soon (and at the bandcamp page, and at the Matches' website), as we plan to deliver more notes, comments, background, explanations, and some answers to questions and requests. (Maybe we'll even tell more about the origination of the nearly-self-explanatory title.)

To all those who planned on getting the album yesterday: big apologies for not hitting our target date and causing frustration. As happens at times in the Matches' world, things got complicated.

This album was created with much care and thought and, though it was an effort fraught with technical hurdles, it was also an effort woven with delicious discovery. It was because of the sudden wave of fans' requests that this music come out, a wave of response that surprised us, that we felt compelled to prepare this album quickly and held it as an honor and not a hassle. We hope you sense the drive and commitment that went into gathering this together and find the final result worthy of your anticipation.

Matches Hiatus

Matches Hiatus
Dear, dear Matches fans,

We’ve spent 2009 soul searching, as a group and separately, starting new projects and having lives outside of our little white tour van. We’ve been lucky to have been 4 artists (well, 5, really) involved in a nearly decade-spanning group project, and have been even luckier to have you as an audience. However, our time to start new projects has come, and right now, The Matches has become something we prefer to look back upon proudly.

Not knowing if or when we might play together as The Matches again, we’ve decided to play a couple going-away shows in our home state of California in August. Sorry this could not be a world tour, for all of you who won't be able to make it. And for those of you who can, we want to make the shows a celebration of all of our years playing for you; including songs from our whole catalog, (yes, E. Von Dahl too!).

We extend our endless gratitude to all of you who have listened, seen us on tour, bought a CD or t-shirt, and inspired us with your energy and enthusiasm for our art. Matches fans have always been known as being uncommonly intense and dedicated. We thank you for supporting us over the past 8 years, and hope that you’ll continue to be fans of our future music and life endeavors.

Final Shows:

Saturday August 22 Los Angeles, CA Troubadour
Sunday August 23 San Francisco, CA The Fillmore

Justin San Souci will be joining us on a few songs at The Fillmore show.

Some of you in Northern California may have caught one of Jon’s solo shows in the past couple of months. His new band (currently unnamed) is debuting at Blake's On Telegraph in Berkeley, CA on Friday August 21. Advance tickets are available through http://www.ticketweb.com. We’re all going and so should you. He has acoustic versions of a few songs on his Myspace, http://www.myspace.com/jonathandevoto.

Much love,
The Matches

Keep A Breast

The Keep A Breast Foundation has partnered with Fox and Unite the United to present Shot In the Pit, a fundraising initiative through Keep A Breast’s Music For Awareness program. Combining art, photography, music, and philanthropy, Shot In the Pit is a touring exhibition featuring band photos from the legendary summer music festival Vans Warped Tour® taken by photographer Erin Caruso. The exhibitions take place at five venues from New York to Los Angeles beginning October 21- December 4, 2008.

“Though the primary focus of the Vans Warped Tour is about having fun, the presence of organizations such as Keep A Breast gives our fans a chance to learn something that could eventually save their lives,” said festival founder Kevin Lyman.

As the Pit Reporter from Vans Warped Tour, Caruso was up close and personal with the bands on the road. From her photo sessions this summer, she has donated over 45 images to the Keep A Breast Foundation. Unite the United will facilitate an online auction of images from the exhibition alongside music memorabilia and celebrity breast casts including Katy Perry beginning November 26 - December 6th. 100% of the proceeds generated from the touring exhibition and the online auction will be donated to the Keep A Breast Foundation’s youth awareness and outreach efforts.
